Saturday Afternoon Fire

This weekend we are being treated to beautiful fall weather. When nap time came around today we just couldn't bring ourselves to head inside. Instead, we enjoyed an impromptu fire complete with marshmallow roasting.

Catching Up with Friends

Over the 4th of July weekend some dear friends of ours, Arvind and Laura, visited with their two adorable kiddos and we all had a fantastic time hanging out together!

This is, admittedly, a much belated post. In addition to posting late, I'm stealing the photos here from Laura since every image she takes is so fantastic!

We first met Arvind and Laura in 2004 when Alex and I started work at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. None of us were married, we were all at the Bachelor Degree stage, and working our first jobs. Laura and I were office mates, classmates at Tufts (electrical engineering MS program) and fast friends. I believe Alex and Arvind originally bonded in the LL gym ;)

The past decade (more!) has taken all of us all over the country and to many different jobs. It is so wonderful, and rewarding, that we have maintained our friendships and now get together with our kids (5!) in tow. The last time we all got together Laura and I were just barely pregnant with the little guys, Dylan and Nikhil, so it was so fun to have them added into the mix this time!

Secrets from Titan's Seas

Astronomy Magazine Cover (link)

Exciting news here; Alex wrote the cover article for Astronomy Magazine's October 2015 edition!
Astronomy Magazine is a great venue for scientific writing. As a popular science publication it's targeted to the general public, not just to experts in a specific field. So, having a prominent article there is a fantastic way to reach a wide audience and excite interest in specific research!

When I was a kid I actually subscribed to Astronomy Magazine. So, I find it both fantastic and a little ironic that my husband has written an article for them! Congratulations, Alex!

Happy Birthday, Noelle!

The milestones just keep coming in the Hayes household. Noelle turned 5-years-old today!

Custom Cake for Noelle

This sweet little girl is soooooo excited it's her birthday. She woke up several times last night and asked if it was morning yet!

Noelle was very specific and, thankfully, very easy with the birthday cake request this year. She wanted a Mickey Mouse, chocolate, vanilla frosting, strawberry cake with green sprinkles and pink letters. Fortunately, she loved the idea of using oreo cookies to make the Mickey and Minnie Mouse. So, voila!

Her big gift this year ia bike without training wheels. I have no idea how long it will take her to learn to ride it, but she sure is excited to have it!

Big bike for the big girl!

Alex and I are celebrating for a slightly different reason as well; we survived 1.5 years with three kids under 5-years-old. That is, in itself, no small feat!

A long-awaited day has finally arrived for Noelle; she is in kindergarten! After months of anticipation Noelle was absolutely bursting with energy this morning. I thought this may be a bittersweet milestone for me but, honestly, her excitement and joy were so profound that I was beaming for her, without a twinge of worry or regret.

The whole family went out to see Noelle off at the bus stop. Cora's excitement was almost as great as Noelle's!

Waiting for the bus*

The bus was, not surprisingly, running a bit late this morning. When it finally appeared Noelle practically charged it. No looking back! We did get a wave from the window, though ;)
Finally on her way

August 2015*

The highlight of August, for me, was how much the three kids have really started to play together. Dylan has been 'in the thick of things' since he could crawl. Now that he is walking, however, he is participating on a whole new level.

Hitching a ride

We now take up an entire carousel row!

The girls have been enjoying the increased Dylan fun almost as much as he has. Noelle and Cora have been very sweet to each other, too. They have been giving many hugs and kisses, saying they missed each other when they were apart, etc. For example, Noelle was extremely supportive of Cora at Cora's annual checkup. She practiced with Cora all of the things the doctor would do; look in mouth & ears, measure height & weight, and discussed the dreaded shots. They practiced the Daniel Tiger approach to shots (close your eyes and think of something happy). It was adorable. At the checkup Noelle even sat next to Cora on the table... and Cora did great!

Keeping Cora company in the waiting room

Perhaps the most fun in August however, was a visit from Grandma & Grandpa Brock and Uncle David. Grandparents are always a favorite, but Uncle David had these three wrapped around his finger in record time!
